Motor insurance is an insurance policy that protects the policyholder against financial losses resulting from accidents or damage involving the insured vehicle. A comprehensive motor insurance policy generally covers vehicle damage, theft, natural disasters, accidental damage, medical expenses arising from bodily injury, legal liability toward third parties for bodily injury or property damage, malicious acts, and injuries or death of the driver and passengers.
Motor insurance mainly provides two types of coverage:
1. Comprehensive Insurance Policy
A Comprehensive Insurance Policy indemnifies the insured against physical damage to the vehicle as well as death or injury to the insured vehicle’s driver or passengers caused by accidents or other covered risks. It also includes compensation payable to third parties for death, bodily injury, or damage to property caused by the insured vehicle.
2.Third-Party Liability Insurance Policy
A Third-Party Liability Insurance Policy covers the legal liability of the insured vehicle owner if the vehicle causes injury, death, or property damage to a third party. The insurer compensates the affected third party for such losses.
Third-party liability insurance is compulsory in Nepal.
